Inscription. Standard Missile 2 (SM-2) Block II was an evolution of the US Navy's proven Standard Missile 1. SM-2 is a semi-active homing, all electric, super-sonic, surfacetoair guided missile. It incorporated midcourse guidance, communication links, and improved terminal homing and provided defense of the fleet from a wide variety of enemy threats. The 3000 pound, 27 foot SM-2 used a Thiokol booster to significantly increase its speed, altitude and range.
