1. What Happened Before 1777 Marker
Inscription. After the French and Indian War ended in 1763. Parlament tried to assert more control over their 13 British colonies, here in North America. American resistance and British action escalated. In April 1775, tensions exploded into war.

The British attacked in the summer of 1776. Redcoats battered General George Washington's army and chased it out of New York City. An American invasion of Canada falled. That winter Washington sidestepped total disaster with two crucial victories at Trenton and Princeton, New Jersey.

British generals made two plans to crush the new United States in 1777. One, capture Philadelphia; this succeeded. Two, move a powerful army from Canada south along New York's waterways and take Albany.
