Inscription. The Americans who served here in 1777 were well acquainted with hardship. Long, grueling marches. Exhausting physical labor. Cold temperatures at night with few blankets. Off-duty amusements restricted. Gambling and daytime swimming prohibited. Mortal peril from sickness, injury, or combat. Pay for a private was only 6 dollars per month. Congress did not always come through with the money.

“Provisions have been extremely scarce. Sometimes not more than two or three days on hand. Once not one. The prospect on this head grows better. Bread is most wanted. Fresh Beef is plenty, but at a very great price”
