The challenges General Gates faced were daunting. His troops, coming from such different regions and cultures, bickered and sometimes even fought each other.

Gates and his staff were up to the mission-critical tasks of supply, intelligence, and discipline. But jealousy and personality clashes-notably with General Arnold-kept complicating matters.

Upon Gates' shoulders rested the heavy responsibility to address the problems in camp and stop the British invasion.

Gates made his headquarters in the home of Ephraim and Anna Woodworth one-half mile south of here. That house was razed in 1829.

Lieutenant Colonel James Wilkinson was this army's Deputy Adjutant General. He fueled the feud between Gates and Arnold and even called Arnold a "pompous little fellow."

A former British officer, Gates had moved to Virginia in 1772. He admitted to his wife Elizabeth that the stress of command was so great, this "Campaign must end my Military Labours."

Horatio Lloyd Gates (July 26, 1727 – April 10, 1806) was a British-born American army officer who served as a general in the Continental Army during the early years of the Revolutionary War. He took credit for the American victory in the Battles of Saratoga (1777) – a matter of contemporary and historical controversy – and was blamed for the defeat at the Battle of Camden in 1780. Gates has been described as "one of the Revolution's most controversial military figures" because of his role in the Conway Cabal, which attempted to discredit and replace General George Washington; the battle at Saratoga; and his actions during and after his defeat at Camden
