Inscription. At 45 feet in length, and 30 inches in diameter, Corporal was ready for its first flight test at White Sands in 1947, with the prototype undergoing flight testing by summer. Corporal was designed to travel beyond the upper atmosphere at supersonic speeds after being remotely fired from a vertical launch altitude, much as the V-2. It carried either a high explosive or nuclear warhead with a range of approximately 75 miles. Though it began at Jet Propulsions Laboratories of the California Institute of Technology, all test firings were done at White Sands. A total of 1101 missiles were built and, by 1963, the Sergeant missile began replacing the Corporal.
