(American, 1928-2018)

Polychromed Aluminum
Frey Foundation, Grand Rapids

This sculpture is one of the most significant works in the history of American art. Created by legendary Pop artist Robert Indiana, it was initially conceived for the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1965. A bold, welcoming image, Indiana has used it in sculpture at a variety of scales, many of which are prominently placed around the world. The life-affirming quality of the message and colorful image have made it a universal icon.
