Six jours après la prise du village, le bois de Mametz est toujours aux mains des Allemands.

La division galloise l'attaquera par l'Est le 7 juillet 1916.

Après une progression lente et incertaine, elle l'investit dans sa quasi-totalité le 11 juillet.

Epuisée, elle évacuera le secteur après avoir perdu 4000 hommes dont 600 tués et 600 disparus.

Le Mémorial, représentant un dragon, symbole du Pays de Galles, est inauguré le 11 juillet 1987.

The Welsh Memorial of Mametz
Six days after the capture of the village, Mametz Wood was still in the hands of the Germans.

The Welsh Division attacked from the east on 7th July 1916, and after advancing slowly and uncertainly, it occupied the wood almost completely by 11th July.

Exhausted, it evacuated the sector after losing 4000 men, including 600 dead and 600 missing.

The Memorial, a dragon - the Welsh national symbol – was inaugurated on 11th July 1987.
