John (Jack) R. Murray

John (Jack) R. Murray. January 28, 1934 - December 2, 2022. , Jack Murray, known as "Mr. New Cumberland," was an outstanding public servant and community leader who demonstrated great passion and commitment to make New Cumberland a better place. His tenacity was reminiscent of Peter Chartier, who first settled the town as a frontier post in the early 18th century. Murray was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean War, 1952-53. After the war, Jack returned home to his beloved hometown and became well-known for his dedication to teaching youth for more than 50 years as a coach, trusted mentor, and friend. Jack served with great distinction as Council President in the Borough of New Cumberland for 44 years. He is credited with putting the borough in a strong financial position, solidifying community services, orchestrating the construction of a new borough building, police and fire stations, the New Cumberland Public Library, improvements to Borough Park, and more. His legacy is defined by character, faith, integrity, humility, and action reflected in one of his favorite quotes… "It is not doing the thing we like to do, but liking the thing we have to do that makes life blessed." Jack is an irreplaceable treasure. His selfless devotion to serving the community went above and beyond the common call., Jack set a high standard as leader exemplar of community service and has been awarded a place on the Path of Leadership in The Peiffer Memorial Arboretum and Nature Preserve, August 6, 2023.,
