Inscription. Imagine a vast army beginning a nighttime retreat, slowly and chaotically, near here on October 8, 1777.

Surprised Americans found the enemy's camp empty the next morning, Major General Horatio Gates now had to decide. Should he keep the American Northern Army guarding Bemus Heights? Or should he try to do what no one in history had done before-capture an entire British Army?

Erected 2024 by Saratoga National Historical Park.
