Excerpt (in translation): About 100 years would pass after the city's relocation in 1624 before Christiania got street lighting. In 1734, there were 75 kerosene lamps in the city. Later they switched to oil, and the last of the oil lanterns was extinguished in 1916. In 1848, the gas lanterns came, and these were in operation until 1929.(Submitted on August 7, 2024.)
The first electric street lights were lit on 13 December 1892 along Karl Johans gate, and the electricity came from the municipal "steam plant" here in Rosenkrantz' gate. In Morgenbladet's coverage of the event, it is said, among other things: "The stream of walkers soon grew bigger and bigger, and everywhere you could hear exclamations of admiration at the wonderful light. The gaslights were initially lit, but soon gave up the competition and went out quietly and unnoticed".
