Inscription.
Seeing General Burgoyne's troops in the wheat fields here, Morgan's Corps and the New Hampshire Continentals attacked. General Arnold then went out "to View the Enemy." He proposed to General Gates "it is Late in the Day but Let me have men & we will have some Fun with them Before Sun Set." Gates agreed, and Arnold made battle preparations.

Burgoyne's troops were spread across two wheat fields separated by woods. The British were confident that their position was strong, but Arnold judged things differently.

Brigadier General Enoch Poor commanded the Northern Army's largest brigade. His seven regiments totaled more than 2,000 men and boys. Poor's troops had fought hard in the Battle of Freeman's Farm on September 19. Now he called on those same soldiers to take the fight to the British once again.
Enoch Poor by Tadeusz Kościuszko, ca. 1780.
