Buried Here: Any Hope of Victory
General Burgoyne and his senior commanders gathered on this hilltop on the evening of October 8 to bury General Fraser. The funeral attracted the Americans’ attention. They cannonaded the mourners, showering the British officers with dirt.
Buried along with Fraser were all British hopes for a victory. Now Burgoyne needed to retreat and save what was left of his army.
Only two British generals died from combat wounds during the eight-year-long war. Fraser was one of them.
Brigadier-General Simon Fraser by James Watson, 1778, after James Scouler, ca. 1776.
Burgoyne honored Fraser's last request to bury him here “on account of the beauty of the view.” The practical Lady Riedesel thought it “caused Unnecessary delay and served to increase the army’s misfortune.”
