Excerpt (in translation): Nytorvet (“New Square”) was laid out in 1852 and renamed in 1951 to Youngstorget (“Young’s Square”). The west side of the square towards Møllergata was for a long time like a steep and damp hillside, giving the square an unfinished appearance. The butchers' stalls around Vår Frelsers church soon proved to have too little capacity, and in December 1876 the municipality allocated money for a two-storey bazaar building with a total of 40 rooms, which was named Nytorvets Bazaar.
The May Day parade left the square for the first time in 1890, but the main event was first added here in 1956. Since then, the arcade on the second floor has served as the square's lectern...
