Redcoats and their Families. Saratoga National Historical Park. , Men and boys from England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and Germany filled the ranks of the British regiments here. Burgoyne's Redcoats were well trained. But few had seen any combat before the Battles at Saratoga. Many soldiers brought their families with them., Most officers were "gentlemen.” Their society thought them automatically fit to lead. Like their soldiers, most of the British officers here were younger than age 30 and had little combat experience., Women made extra money by laundering or sewing clothes, nursing or selling food, drink, and sundries. Families lived the army life alongside the troops., Drummers were essential to communicate orders. During battle, they helped take the wounded to the surgeons and nurses., All British soldiers volunteered to join the army. The army provided them pay food, clothing, shelter, and medical care. Retirees got pensions for long-term service or disability., Most British officers came from wealthy, influential families. They bought their own expensive uniforms. Most even bought their rank. Youth was no obstacle.
