1. Old Lodge Marker

Inscription. Early Cloudcroft boasted an impressive array of summer activities. Within a few blocks of this location one could arrive by train; rent a luxury room, cabin, or tent; attend concerts and lectures; dine; dance; bowl; ride horseback; stroll in the forest; or embark on a tour of the Mescalero Apache Reservation. This 1915 railway map was prepared in order to move the passenger and freight depots closer to Burro Avenue, but the project was abandoned in October 1918. The Cloudcroft Land & Lumber Co. used part of this grade to build their railway through Cloudcroft in 1923.

The original Cloudcroft Lodge was completes at this site in 1901. It was the crown jewel of the Alamogordo & Sacramento Mountain Railway's construction projects in new village. Sadly, at the start of the 1909 summer season, a kitchen fire spread and the entire structure was consumed.
