Inscription.
This plaque commemorates the historic site of
Abraham & Straus
In 1885 Abraham Abraham and Joseph Wechsler selected this site as the home of the retail enterprise that would become Abraham and Straus. As a supporter of the Brooklyn Bridge Abraham's vision and sense of civic pride led to the creation of a new downtown shopping district with this innovative store as its centerpiece. In 1893 the Association of Wechsler Abraham dissolved, and, in partnership with Isidor and Nathan Straus of R H. Macy & Company, the thriving business changed its name to Abraham & Straus. In 1929 A & S became part of Federated Department Stores Inc. In 1995, this renowned Brooklyn landmark merged with another historic New York City institution
