1. The Cost of Being in the Minority Marker

Inscription.
This land was farmed by John and Effelanah Freeman. They sided with the British when war broke out in 1775. This was a hard choice because most of their neighbors supported the Revolution. The Freemans had to abandon their farm in 1777. John and his son Thomas enlisted in the King's Loyal Americans. Effelanah and their other children took refuge under the protection of the British Army.

The Freemans grew wheat, rye, maize, oats and potatoes and raised cattle, hogs and sheep. Their daughter Mary claimed they had "60 acres under improvement with food, log house, and barn."

Because of old Dutch patroonships, New Yorkers often did not own the land they lived on. The Freemans leased about 170 acres here from one of New York's wealthiest landowners-Philip Schuyler.
