General Arnold ordered Colonel Morgan's riflemen and light infantry to harass the British then marching toward this farm. When the riflemen arrived here, they drove the British back - at first. Then Brigadier-General Simon Fraser's reinforcements coming in from the west outflanked the Americans. Morgan's riflemen retreated in disorder. The British held the field - but this battle was only just beginning.
With his riflemen on the run, Morgan cried out I am ruined, by G d! Major Morris ran on so rapidly with the front, that they were beaten before I could get up with the rear, and my men are scattered God knows where.
