1. The Vendome Marker
Inscription. The Vendome, with its striking red slate mansard roof, richly detailed cornice and terra cotta panels, is a distinctive Romanesque, Queen Anne-revival structure erected in 1887 as the first multi-family apartment building in Brooklyn. Threatened with destruction in 1987, the Vendome was saved from the wrecker's ball by the vision and tenacity of local resident Ralph A. Walter (1960-1995), who galvanized the community with an unwavering dedication to revitalizing the building and neighborhood. Although we lost him far too soon, Ralph's determined leadership of the successful battle to save this historic building for Clinton Hill is a living inspiration to us all.
