Men and Beasts, Hard at Work
Imagine hundreds of British sailors struggling to row and push boats piled high with supplies in the river. Oxen and horses also hauled heavily-laden wagons and carts down the river road. It was a massive undertaking to keep an 18th century army supplied. Draft animals in this baggage train were often worked to death.
About 150 Royal Navy sailors served moving food, ammunition and other heavy goods by water. One of them was Masters Mate Edward Pellew. He later became one of Britains most famous naval heroes.

It took hundreds of Canadian and American royalist teamsters to drive more than 1,000 horses and oxen. Burgoyne's wagon and carts carried tents, baggage and other supplies.
