Inscription.
Brigadier General Enoch Poor's Brigade drove the British out of the woods. American troops made bolder attacks into the open field. The British fell back further, leaving behind two valuable cannons. Continentals tried to haul those guns off the field. These proved to be too heavy to move without horses. Men and boys fought hand-to-hand to take back the guns.

A detachment of Massachusetts Continental troops was ordered to "make a rapid advance and charge with the bayonet. The enemy immediately retreated in confusion... We pursued, and the field was literally covered with the dead and wounded."
