Germans Arrive to Save the Day
By evening the battle was going badly for General Burgoyne. He ordered his German troops to march up from near the Hudson River. They arrived at Freeman's Farm just as the Americans' "fire was more galling than it ever had been." They reinforced the weakening British line.
Riedesels Reinforcement by Don Trioani, 2017.
Major General Friedrich Riedesel came with more than 700 German troops and two cannons to help the British win. German infantrymen went into the woods. They used trees for cover so they could "attack and dislodge the enemy without great loss." The Americans were no match for this unexpected attack. Overwhelmed, they retreated.
