Inscription.
After the battle here ended, General Burgoyne had gotten word that British troops then in New York City planned to help him. Burgoyne was elated. He ordered his army to set up camps and erect defenses from here to the Hudson River. This is where they built the Light Infantry Redoubt. It was Burgoyne's strongest fort, protected by eight artillery pieces and a tough, well-trained garrison.

The red and white posts mark where the redoubt's walls stood in 1777.

Major Alexander, Lord Balcarres commanded the British Light Infantry Battalion here. His 500 troops defended this redoubt. These elite soldiers had fought little on September 19. The burden of heavy combat had fallen on less-experienced soldiers.
