Here at Lieutenant Colonel Heinrich Breymann's fortified camp, you could have seen 160 men, all volunteers, all Americans, and all loyal to the Crown. More than 1,000 Americans joined General Burgoyne's army in 1777. Their reasons for doing so varied widely.
Some sought safety. Some felt it was their patriotic duty. Some were betting that the power of the British Empire would win. There were no draftees among these soldiers, boatmen, laborers, and teamsters.
Captain Samuel MacKay's Loyal Volunteers were camped here. Many descended from desperately poor Palatine German refugees that the British had resettled in New York in the early 1700s.
