Imagine about 600 German soldiers guarding the log fortification here in October 1777. This important post guarded the key road that went to the Hudson River, behind British lines. Burgoyne's army had 2,800 German auxiliaries leased from the Duke of Braunschweig and the Count of Hessen-Hanau. This was over 1/3 of his total force.

Duke Carl leased part of his army to help the British crush the rebellion in North America. His Braunschweig soldiers were not "Hessians." Hessians came from the Hessen region of Germany.
Carl I, Duke of Braunschweig und Lόneburg by Johann Georg Zieseni, 1773.

More than 100 wives and children came here with the German soldiers. One officer wrote "It is the highest test of affection in a woman, to share with her husband the toils and hardships of the campaign... She...traversed dreary regions, encountered hunger and weariness, and witnessed all the carnage of a long-disputed field without sharing the glory."
Braunschweig followers by Don Troiani, 2015
