Regarding W. H. Auden (1907-1973). Renowned as a prolific poet, playwright, and critic, Auden was one of many intellectuals who flocked to Spain in the late 1930s to join the Spanish Republicans futile opposition to the fascist revolt of Francisco Franco. While there Auden served as an ambulance driver. He became a U.S. citizen in 1939, and in 1948 he won the Pulitzer Prize for The Age of Anxiety, a long poem in six parts. In 1956 he received a National Book Award in Poetry for The Shield of Achilles, a poem and poetry collection.

The marker is on the nearby wall at far right. In the distance can be seen the west towers of York Minster, the city's famous cathedral constructed in AD 1230-1427. It rests on the site of a Roman fortress dating from a thousand years before that.
