1. Wolvesey Castle Marker
Inscription. Wolvesey Castle was originally the chief residence of the Bishops of Winchester, among the richest and most powerful figures in medieval England. The West Hall, the first part of the present palace, was begun by Bishop William Giffard c.1110. The East Hall was added by Bishop Hugh of Blois in 1135-8, who fortified the site with further walls and a tower in 1141. The buildings were badly damaged during the Civil War, c.1646, and abandoned in the 1680s, when a new palace was built on part of the site. The ruins are now in the care of English Heritage.
