Lockheed P-38G Statistics. . , The Lockheed P-38 Lightning, originally designed to meet the 1937 Army Air Corps requirements for a high altitude interceptor, became one of the most versatile fighters of World War II. It saw action in every American theater of operations during the war. The Lightning was employed operationally for the first time as a fighter in the Aleutian Islands and achieved its first aerial victory there. A total of 10,038 were built of which 1,082 were G models.
