La fontaine en bronze, Les quatre parties du monde, dessinée par Carpeaux et exécutée par Davioud en 1875, est un hommage à Marco Polo (1254-1324) et à Robert Cavelier de la Salle (1643-1687). Le premier, explorateur de l'Orient, vécut plusieurs années en Chine avant de reprendre son voyage; le second, explorateur de l'Occident, parcourut les contrées des Amériques du Nord. Le square est planté de marronniers à fleurs blanches. Ses allées amènent jusqu'à l'entrée dujardin du palais du Luxembourg.

The bronze fountain, The Four Parts of the World, drawn by Carpeaux and executed by Davioud in 1875, is a tribute to Marco Polo (1254-1324) and to Robert Cavelier de la Salle (1643-1687). The first, an explorer of the East, lived several years in China before resuming his journey; the second, an explorer of the West, traversed the countries of North America. The square is planted with chestnut trees with white flowers. Its paths lead to the entrance to the garden of the Luxembourg Palace.
