Lynchburg, Virginia — The American South (Mid-Atlantic)
Water Bearer
Originally cast in zinc, the Water Bearer was installed at the city's Clay Street Reservoir in 1883. Over time the statue deteriorated and eventually collapsed in 2012. Beginning in 2013 and taking nearly two years to complete, the broken pieces were re-molded and recast in bronze under the leadership of the Lynchburg Historical Foundation.
The rebirth of the Water Bearer mirrors downtown Lynchburg's own rejuvenation. It serves as a reminder of its historic past and a symbol of its bright and promising future.
