Operation Enduring Freedom - Afghanistan. . "Operation Enduring Freedom - Afghanistan" (OEF-A) 7 October 2001 through 31 December 2014 (succeeded by Operation Freedom's Sentinel). In response to the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001 (on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon) led by Osama Bin Laden, combat operations started in Afghanistan on 7 October 2001 to destroy terrorist training camps and capture Taliban and Al Qaeda leaders. The United States led coalition removed the Taliban from power and crippled Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. The Taliban could not be completely defeated since it had a sanctuary in neighboring Pakistan. Operation Enduring Freedom - Afghanistan transformed into a continuing war with no end in sight because of the sanctuary in Pakistan and the continued influx of foreign radical Islamic Muslim terrorist fighters as part of a global jihad (holy war against non-muslims). Osama Bin Laden was tracked down and killed in Pakistan by United States Navy Seals on 2 May 2011. United States casualties, 2271 killed and 20,083 wounded.
