Inscription.
Iraq War. . Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) "Iraq War" 20 March 2003 through 18 December 2011. The Iraq War began on 20 March 2003 with the invasion of Iraq by a United States led coalition that toppled the government of Saddam Hussein. This was based on the assertion that Iraq possessed Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), and that the Iraqi government posed an immediate threat to the United States and it's coalition allies since Saddam Hussein was harboring and supporting Al Qaeda. The invasion began with a "Shock and Awe" bombing campaign. Iraqi forces were quickly overwhelmed as United States forces swept through the country. Saddam Hussein's government collapsed, and he was captured during "Operation Red Dawn" by the 4th Infantry Division from Fort Hood (Texas) on 13 December 2003. He was convicted by a military court and executed by hanging on 30 December 2006. In the aftermath of the invasion, the power vacuum led to widespread sectarian violence between the Shia (Shiite) majority and Sunni minority, and a lengthy insurgency by radical Islamic Muslim terrorists against United States and coalition forces. The majority of casualties occurred as a result of the religious conflicts and insurgency between 2004 and 2007. The United States suffered 4497 killed and 32,226 wounded.
