Bar Harbor Inn Gazebo. . , The Gazebo at the Bar Harbor Inn is an authentic recreation of an original design built by noted architect Calvin Ryder in 1840 on the "White House" lawn in Belfast, Maine. Listed on the National Historic Register, Ryder's Gazebo was the only one of its kind until 1985 when a replica was built by Francis Cormier of Deer Isle, Maine on the Cheney Estate. In May 1991, Mr. Cormier built and erected the Bar Harbor Inn Gazebo. The Gazebo has over 800 board feet of specially selected Douglas Fir from Oregon. Every board was cut to size using original wood measurements (back when a 2x4 was 2"x4"). From the framing timbers and lattice work to the 72 decorative "teeth," careful attention was given to the shaping of each piece, ensuring a perfect fit. As a result of these exacting specifications, over 1,400 hours were spent constructing the Gazebo. Other materials used include: Western Red Cedar for the floor, 100 pounds of lead for the corners, brass pins to fasten the lead, stainless steel nails, vertical grain Douglas Fir for the roof and gold leaf for the top. The roof of The Bar Harbor Inn Gazebo is adorned with eight condos for the local birds (these units sold out quickly). Each unit was designed with a slight tilt in the floor so rain water will run out the hole under the bird house stoop. The carefully thought out design and meticulous workmanship of the Bar Harbor Inn Gazebo reflects a piece of history for the enjoyment of all visitors to Bar Harbor., David J.
