1. “Beneath the Surface” Marker

Inscription. “Beneath the Surface” is artist Terry Dickinson’s commemoration of the comeback of the Sturgeon in the Mackinac area against a backdrop of the Eber Ward shipwreck and Gray’s Reef lighthouse. We are pleased to display work that not only reflects the importance of the restoration and preservation of our Northern Michigan natural resources but is presented in a local and familiar context.

Terry Dickinson began his art career in 1974 painting murals in Bay City, Michigan, to commemorate the Nation’s Bicentennial. He has continued painting murals since and has completed over 500 images from Flint to Michigan Tech University in Houghton with the largest collection of murals in Frankenmuth. From 2010 through 2020 Dickinson has been the acting director for AuSable Artisan Village in Grayling. His studio work has won awards in fine art competitions from Alpena to Traverse.
