1. The First Europeans Marker

Inscription. One of Coronado's lieutenants, Captain Garcia Lopez de Cardenas, discovered the Grand Canyon in 1540. In the fall of 1776 an exploring group led by two Spanish priests, Dominguez and Escalante, were the first Europeans to see Glen Canyon. John Wesley Powell led a river expedition down the Green and Colorado Rivers and on through Glen Canyon in 1869. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons) began to explore and colonize the region in the late 1800s. But until the 1950s, surprisingly few people of European descent had seen Glen Canyon.
