1. Construction of Glen Canyon Dam Marker
Inscription. Work began in 1956. Four years were needed to prepare the site including the blasting of two river bypass tunnels and spillway tunnels, the erection of two huge cofferdams, the construction of a highway bridge just downstream from the dam site (a project element that had not been employed at Hoover Dam leading to decades of increasingly troublesome highway congestion and dam operations conflicts on the crest of the dam) and the deep blasting and excavation of the river bed and cliffs to assure a solid dam foundation. Three more years were needed to place the concrete for the dam.
