Eska Dryer
After going through the washing process, coal was conveyed by a belt to the coal dryer. This dryer, a Carpenter Coal Dryer [by McNally Pittsburg], was used at the Eska Mine along with the Eska Coal Washery displayed in this exhibit. The mine was located east of Wishbone Hill and accessed by Jonesville Road in Sutton.
This dryer, constructed of heavy-gauge steel, has a housing that is 8' in diameter, 4' high and 1.5" thick. A domed, steel-plated cover is 1' high and a 3" steel shaft protrudes from the top. The shaft supports a dome screen inside the dryer. The estimated weight of this dryer is 3 to 5 tons.
This dryer had a motor driven from the top producing centrifugal force of 1,850 revolutions per minute to reduce the moisture content in coal to 8% or 9%. The dry coal was removed by a chute under the dryer and was conveyed to the storage bin.
