Sutton-Alpine in Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska — Northwest (North America)
Boilers
The boiler on the left, built by Pennsylvania Boiler Works of Erie, Pennsylvania, is stationary. The one on the right was built by the Kewnee Company in Illinois and it could be either stationary or portable. Water was fed in from the top to fill the boilers half full. Steel tubes ran the entire length of the tank, capturing heat from burning coal. Hot smoke traveled down the tubes to heat the water and produce steam. Boilers of this size produced approximately 100 pounds of pressure. If the temperature of the water reached more than 300 degrees, a soft plug blew out, allowing water and steam to escape and smother the fire. If the soft plug failed, the entire boiler could explode.
