Sutton-Alpine in Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska — Northwest (North America)
Hitchcock Cabin
Made of spruce logs harvested on his Caribou Creek property, Jim Hitchcock constructed this cabin in the mid to late 1960's. It was designed to be used for bathrooms with showers at a City of Palmer RV Park (now the site of the Palmer Court House). The cabin was moved to the Alpine Historical Park in the early 1990's and served as the Park's restrooms for 23 years.
Since 1949 Jim has been building several log cabins a year. His cabins are clear span buildings known for their open ceilings with timber trusses for support. Jim taught log cabin construction at Mat-Su Community College and UAA for over 30 years. He mostly uses spruce logs from his property on Caribou Creek and has harvested 2 crops of spruce in the 71 years he has lived there.
Jim has actively participated in the communities of the Matanuska Valley for many decades (Mat-Su Borough Assembly, Valley Performing Arts, Twindly Bridge, and aviation instructor). Jim is a member of the AHS Board serving as President 2013-2015.
