Inscription.
These pieces of petrified wood were found at the Wishbone Hill escarpment, just north of here. Fossilized plant types document there were warm, subtropical temperatures in this region 55 million years ago. The petrified forests in this area are some of the world's largest and best preserved. There are dozens of standing petrified trees surrounded by fossils of flowers, seeds, cones, needles and leaves. It is unusual to find upright petrified tree trunks and even more unusual to find them with their fossilized leaves. The petrified trees were dawn redwoods (Metasequoia) related to the redwoods of California, and they grew to giant proportions. A Park exhibit of plant fossils is located in the Mary Geist House (yellow building).

These petrified trees were donated to the Alpine Historical Park by Linda Sloan, MD.
