Walt Myar Memorial Garden
Walt Myar
| | (1914-2009) | |
Walt was a coal miner at Jonesville coal mine from 1945 until 1967. He worked as a millwright and master mechanic. He enjoyed exploring the mountains and valleys around the mining area and learned about the indigenous plants and local history. After leaving the coal mine industry he built a commercial green house and grew rare and unique indigenous and northern climate rock garden plants (particularly Trollius varieties) that supplied many nurseries and gardens in Anchorage and the Mat-Su Borough. He was a great teacher and knew the Latin and local names for everything he grew. Many of the perennial plants in the Park's flowerbeds are gifts from Walt's nursery. This garden is created using perennial and indigenous plants in Walt's memory.
