1. On the line Marker

Inscription. Between here and the British army in New York City lay a land of divided loyalty. Washington kept several brigades patrolling out there “on the line.” The soldiers never knew who was Patriot and who was Tory. And mistakes could be fatal.

The Watchung Mountains took no sides but divided the armies from one another – them from us and us from them. Patrolling “on the line” meant patrolling the Watchung Mountains – mostly.

New England troops under Gen. John Stark camped in this vicinity during the winter of 1779-80.

There were much fewer trees during the winter encampment of 1779-80. This site gave the Continental troops a commanding view of the British in Newark, Perth Amboy and New Brunswick, NJ and New York City.
