Sir Allen Bristol Aylesworth
1854-1952
Born in Newburgh of United Empire Loyalist ancestry, Aylesworth was educated at the University of Toronto, and called to the Ontario Bar in 1878. As the Canadian member of the Alaska Boundary Tribunal in 1903, he presented his country's views in a minority report. Elected to the Dominion parliament in 1905, he served in the cabinet of Sir Wilfrid Laurier as postmaster-general and minister of Labour, 1905-06, and minister of justice, 1906-11. He acted as British representative at the North Atlantic Fisheries Arbitration in The Hague, 1910-11, and was knighted for his services. In 1923, he was appointed to the Canadian Senate.

Excerpt: (Newburgh United Church Cemetery, Newburgh, Ontario, Canada) As Minister of Justice, he oversaw the pardon of Angelina Napolitano, Canada's first battered woman defence case. On 11 January 1923 he was appointed to the Canadian Senate upon the recommendation of William Lyon Mackenzie King. He represented the senatorial division of North York, Ontario until his death. Mount Aylesworth, aka Boundary Peak 177, a summit on the Alaska-British Columbia boundary, was named for him in 1927.

2. Allen Bristol Aylesworth (Law Society of Ontario).
Excerpt: He was made a Queen's Counsel for Ontario in 1889 and for Canada in 1890. Though offered an appointment to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1903, Aylesworth instead accepted the position as a member of the Alaska Boundary Tribunal. In 1904, he unsuccessfully stood as a Liberal candidate for Durham, Ontario, in the federal election but was elected to the House of Commons in a 1905 by-election for York North and re-elected in 1908. In addition to his legal practice and political career, Aylesworth was an elected bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada between 1891 and 1906 before becoming an ex-officio bencher.
