“The most beautiful inn”*
The Hotel «Zum Schwert»
The inn at Weinplatz 10, formerly known as the «Hôtel de l'Epée», was first mentioned in records in 1406 as an inn. The guest book records some particularly famous travellers who stopped here in Zurich: Casanova, Leopold Mozart with his two children Wolfgang and Nannerl, Privy Councillor Goethe, Louis Napoleon, Madame de Staël, Tsar Alexander I, Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Johannes Brahms, Carl Maria von Weber, Franz Liszt and Johannes Brahms.
• "Anyone who has seen the starry night from the "Zum Schwert" inn is no longer curious about the splendors of paradise," wrote Leopold Mozart.
• "The view of Lake Zurich from the Schwert will stay with me for a long time," Goethe wrote in his diary.
1918 The hotel operation has to be closed. The canton purchases the property.

1938 The entire complex is purchased by the company “Samen Mauser”.

1991 After another change of ownership, a soft renovation is carried out in cooperation with the monument preservation authorities, during which the classic 19th century façade is also renovated. As a special gem, the "Chinoise" room with its wallpaper paintings is renovated.
