1. George Washington Visit Marker
Inscription.
While President, George Washington visited the town of Shrewsbury. Two children greeted him as he emerged from his carriage, and he handed each of them coins. Artemas Ward, one of the first generals of the Colonial forces and a Shrewsbury resident, refused to meet Washington, evidently still bitter about his military displacement early in the Revolutionary War.
