Fort Snelling in Hennepin County, Minnesota — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
The Sutler Store
Reconstructed (Original about 1823-82)
The Sutler store was like a modern post exchange, or PX.
Sutlers were civilian shopkeepers, the Army contracted with them to sell goods that the military did not supply. Their stores also served as soldiers clubs and mail rooms.
In the early 1880s, a new "post-traders store" was built nearby. Eventually, the old Civil War prison just on the outside of this wall became the new post exchange.

This plan, included in Lt. James McClure's 1835 report on the fort's buildings, shows an addition to the original store.
