all of Canada’s Methodists into one church the following July. One of the leading congregations of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Canada, it had two bishops of that body (Rev. John O. Reynolds and Rev. Albert Carman) as regular attendants and was the place for the convocations of Albert College when the latter had university status. When the Tabernacle Church outgrew its facilities at 329 Church St. in 1877, a new church was built here in 1878 at 305 Church Street. This building was demolished in 1996 when it was closed and purchased by the separate school board.

large number of them being United Empire Loyalists settled in the Belleville area. St. Matthew’s United Church is a “blended family” of two great historic Methodist Churches here in Belleville. Our story begins with Tabernacle United Church that was built in 1875 and was located on the East side of Church Street at the base of the Belleville water tower. Holloway Street United Church was built in 1876 and served its West Hill neighbourhood. St. Matthew's United Church is a new Church, the product of the amalgamation of Holloway Street and Tabernacle United Churches plus the Bay of Quinte Ministry with the Deaf. St. Matthew's was officially established in the summer of 1995 during the period that the Rev. Barry Goodwin was serving as Interim Minister at Holloway Street United Church.
