Inscription. Born in Ireland, 1776, Samuel Smiley became a major Bardstown merchant, building this brick storehouse before 1815. He supplied the carpet in 1819, as a donation for Bishop Flaget's new St. Joseph Cathedral. Part of Beall's row of brick stores, it was later called 'Smiley's Old Store' for many years.
Born in Lorraine, France, John Losson came from Switzerland by 1890 and created a famous restaurant, grocery, bakery & confectioners operation in this building from 1900 - 1950. The new facade was installed on his restaurant about 1925 to distinguish it from the matching portion to the north side. This is the oldest three-and-one-half story building in all of Bardstown.

Contributing to the Bardstown National Register District.
