1. P.J. Ryan's Dwelling House Marker

Inscription. A native of Ireland, Patrick J. Ryan arrived in Jacksonville in 1853 at the age of 23. In that year he purchased the Palmetto Bowling Saloon that marked the dawning of his career as one of the town’s earliest and longest term commercial property investors. This building has been used as a Hotel, a Restaurant, Office, Ice Cream Parlor, Tea Room, Wine Tasting, and a Residential Dwelling. Most Notably, after a disastrous fire in 1873 that leveled the Union Hotel on California Street the owner relocated operations to this structure until the brick U.S. Hotel, the structure we know today, opened in 1880 with a Tammany Day celebration, a Fourth of July Ball, and a visit by President Rutherford B. Hayes. Shortly after Proprietor George M. Coburn ran this dwelling house as the “Jacksonville Hotel” with an advertising slogan “first class house in every particular.”
