Imperial Castle and Burgrave's Castle
Inscription.
This gate separates the Burgrave's Castle from the Imperial Castle. The emperor's administrators, the burgraves of Nuremberg, lived in the Burgrave's Castle.
The Imperial Castle was only inhabited whenever the emperors themselves came to visit. It extends across the Outer and Inner Courtyards, along a distance of roughly 52 metres. The Outer Courtyard housed the imperial administration buildings and stables, while the Inner Courtyard contained the residential and representational buildings of the emperor (Palas and Women's quarters). The Imperial Castle hosted numerous gatherings of the court, Diets and juridical sessions the official meetings between the emperor and representatives of the Holy Roman Empire.
